In the Spring of 2009 my good friends had the foresight to book a week at the Salani Surf Resort. This was my first ever 'surf resort' to ever visit...and man it was incredible if you can afford it. The people working there are hired from village around it so the resort definitely supports the locals. The huts, frequent boat rides out, and the food was top notch - certainly not what I'm used to on a surf trip! The next year the Tsunami that hit Japan also wiped the entire resort off it's peninsula in the river. Since members of the resort were checking the surf at 6AM that morning, they saw the tide run out to sea and realized what was going on. They were able to alert everyone in the entire village to get to high ground, and as a result, no one was injured in their village or the resort. Since then they've rebuilt, so if you're looking for a worthy place to spend your money, support the locals, and get shacked - check out the Salani Surf Resort located on the island of Savaii, Western Samoa. www.salanisurfresort.com
